New Year's Resolutions: Discipline vs Motivation

February 1, 2017

We’re now one month in to 2017 and we wanted to keep the discussion about New Year's Resolutions going and touch on the importance of discipline over motivation.

Simply Measured recently recorded that 53% of New Years Resolutions across social media were about eating better and Forbes have researched that only 8% of people actually stick to them. How many of you can honestly say you’ve kept to your resolutions? While we definitely believe motivation has it’s place, it can be fleeting.  Discipline however is long term. When you create healthy habits and stick to them, motivation becomes less important. Brushing your teeth, taking a shower, (checking Facebook anyone 😉) all daily life rituals that we don't even think twice about but are integral to our health. If you can apply this thinking to what you put in your body, resolutions will become less important/easier to stick too should you choose to make them.

One of our very own #charliesangels and cross-fit queen Zoe sums it it up perfectly:

“Everywhere you go, you see people trying to get motivated to do something, to make a change. Motivation doesn't lead you to action.. you don’t need more motivation – you need discipline. Discipline is consistent, it's habitual, it's rare. It doesn’t just 'happen'. It’s intentional & it’s repeated. Every. Single. Day. Get rid of your excuses, create routine, decide if it's worth it.. & invest in it.”

Now this brings us to today’s topic, #rainbowfood which is what we’re all about (when we’re not taste testing #charliesballs that is🙈) Initially designed as a way to encourage kids to eat healthy, we believe eating rainbow food is just as important for adults. Each colour vegetable has its own set of unique disease fighting chemicals called phytochemical’s and we’ve compiled some of our teams favs plus their associated benefits.

Our #girlboss Charlie loves Beetroot which has Anthocyanin the plant pigment that provides it’s distinctive hue. Anthocyanin is also packed with antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage and can also help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease. It’s also known as the most natural form of pre-workout (which is why we might just be testing a beetroot brownie #comingsoon)

Aaron and Max are all about Tomatoes and Capsicum, both filled with Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer and keep our heart healthy.  Plus, did you know that cooking tomatoes actually increases the level of Phytochemical’s however it also reduces the level of vitamin C.

Marie, Megan and Zoe have a not-so-secret love affair with Pumpkin, Sweet Potato and Carrots. Fuelled with Vitamin A these guys help to maintain healthy mucous membranes and healthy eyes. And a little fun fact for you, due to their high carotenoid levels, there’s no need to sunbathe because they offer you a natural golden glow. Orange you glad we told you 😉

Hannah, Peta and Tuuli are our resident #greenthumbs with a special love for Asparagus Kale and Broccoli. These green guys contain a variety of different phytochemical’s including carotenoids, indoles and saponins that work together to fight off cancer.

Stopping the binge circle is difficult we know, we’re humans too and believe us we’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of ‘I’m not good enough’, I’ll never achieve my goals’ or ‘I hate my body’. If you’re still reading we want to encourage you to be the change you want to see in the world. It’s never too late and the biggest investment you can make is in yourself and your body because the truth is it’s going to be with you for a very long time.
